Site-specific Dance Workshop by Chiew Peishan*

We are glad to invite dance artist Chiew Peishan to facilitate a Site-Specific Dance Workshop for interested BREATH participants. It will take place at selected locations around HomeTeamNS Khatib and Yishun N8 Park.

Site-specific dance considers elements that are uniquely present in a space in the crafting of movement responses and experiences of connection. Those elements may include the function of the space, its architectural design, living beings and inanimate objects that shape the environment, material and texture of the fixtures, ambient noise, natural and man-made light sources and even, one’s personal motivation to dance at a particular place.

On-site movement exploration offers stimuli that are differentiated from a conventional dance studio environment. The workshop seeks to heighten awareness and connection within one’s body, cultivate relational sensibilities with the immediate landscape, as well as expand experiences of the dancing body in the everyday outdoor public space. Participants will be led through a warm-up, and guided through a series of structured tasks and improvisation tools for physical exploration and play.

I'm Interested!

Dancers are to indicate their interest on the online registration form when signing up for BREATH 2024.

If you have any questions or concerns, please email enquiries@dacademy.com.sg.

*only for dACADEMY Students, dTEAM and The Apprentice Company (Contemporary) Dancers

Chiew Peishan

Peishan is a dance artist. She graduated with a Master of Arts in Contemporary Dance (Distinction) from London Contemporary Dance School, with the support of National Arts Council Arts Scholarship (Overseas). She attained a Diploma in Dance from LASALLE College of the Arts in 2007, following her graduation from Nanyang Technological University with a Bachelor of Accountancy in 2004.

She was an artist (2007 to 2011) and assistant artistic director (2020 to 2023) with Frontier Danceland, and manager, associate artistic director and artist with RAW Moves (2013 to 2016). Engaging the body as the central medium, her works explore the connections and tensions between reality and imagination, and situate in the in-between of subjective truth and inventive representation.

Peishan has created for Frontier Danceland, Re: Dance Theatre, The Human Expression (T.H.E) Second Company, RAW Moves, Dance in Situ, and education institutions LASALLE College of the Arts, School of the Arts Singapore, National University of Singapore and Singapore Management University. Her works have been presented in da:ns festival and Huayi - Chinese Festival of the Arts by Esplanade - Theatres on the Bay and M1 Contact Contemporary Dance Festival in Singapore, as well as in the United Kingdom, Hong Kong, Korea and Taiwan.

As an educator, she has lectured at Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, LASALLE College of the Arts and School of the Arts Singapore.
